Kenya

With more than 50 national parks and reserves to choose from, there is perhaps no better place in East Africa to spot wildlife. Especially if you’re a Rhino lover.

Lions, Rhino, Elephants, Giraffe, Cheetah, Leopard, it doesn’t matter what you’re most interested in seeing, Kenya probably has it. While this is the most expensive safari destination in East Africa, it just might be worth it. Kenya’s parks are absolutely heaving with wildlife. While the diversity of landscape might not be the most prominent, that’s really not what you’re here for anyway. Be sure to experience at least one of Kenya’s 40+ tribal communities during your stay.

Kenya Travel Guide

Recommended Destinations: Nairobi, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Hell’s Gate National Park, Samburu National Park, Maasai Mara National Park, Mombasa, Lamu Island

One Bucketlist Item You Cannot Miss: Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to all three species of African Rhino, including the last two Northern White Rhinos in the world. This was by far my favorite park we visited in Kenya.

Things to Consider Before You Go: Everyone visits the Maasai Mara. It’s impressive. However, there are plenty of other parks to consider within Kenya, without all the crowds and overtourism. Consider booking everything once you arrive in Kenya for the best price.

Recommended Minimum Trip Length: 2-3 weeks.

Expected Backpacker Budget

On a Shoestring: $50/day

Flashpacker: $100/day

Backpacker Luxury: $200/day

Budgets in East Africa depend greatly on what kind of safari schedule you have. The more time you spend in parks the more the costs dramatically rise. Backpacker Luxury, in this case, is for people who book a guided safari. A flashpacker is people who visit the parks on their own or as a self-drive. Shoestring travelers will only visit one or two parks during their stay.

Kenya is perfect for travelers looking to see an abundance of wildlife in a short period of time.
