Ethiopia is the single most difficult destination I’ve ever traveled to. Everything from the ultra-orthodox religion to the literal time of day & calendar date beats to the sound of it’s own drum. Ethiopia is one of the oldest nations in existence today, and one of two African nations never touched by the greedy hands of colonization. It’s these eccentricities that make it such an incredible travel destination, even when it’s an incredible pain in the ass.
Ethiopia is one of the most topographically diverse nations on the African continent. There is the Danakil Depression, for starters. Calling it inhospitable is generous. The sun-caked desert is one of the hottest, dryest, lowest-elevation places on Earth. It’s known for its active volcanoes and vibrantly colored mineral deposits. The North has steep mountains for multi-day treks. The central highlands host high-elevation cities like Addis and the ancient hand-carved churches of Lalibela. There’s also the lush southern national parks peppered with tribal communities with traditions and cultural practices as diverse as the landscapes.

But despite its diversity, Ethiopia is not for everyone. Not yet. It’s a difficult nation to travel. With ever-changing security concerns, a lack of basic infrastructure, and decidedly not luxurious lodging options…this is a place best suited for backpackers. Or at least those willing to forgo western comforts in exchange for incredible cultural experiences.
Ethiopia Travel Guide
Recommended Destinations: Addis Ababa, Omo Valley, Harar, Simien Mountains, Lalibela, Aksum.
Minimum Recommended Trip Length: 30 days to see the “whole country.”
One Bucketlist Item You Cannot Miss: An overnight stay with the Mursi tribe in the Omo Valley. Read my Omo Valley blog post for a reliable guide recommendation.
Things to Consider Before You Go: There is no luxury travel here. There is, however, expensive travel. Be careful when booking tours to Ethiopia or hiring a guide, as most are CRAZY overpriced, and very little money trickles down to locals. Also, be sure to check the security situation for your “must-see” destinations before you go as sometimes the areas will close entirely.
Visa Requirements
Ethiopia requires a visa for most travelers. If you are from the United States, you can apply online here or on arrival and be granted a 30-day stay in the country.
Estimated Backpacker Budget
On a Shoestring: $25/day
Flashpacker: $40/day
Backpacker Luxury: $80/day
Keep in mind these are backpacker budgets. On a shoestring expect to be eating local meals, staying in dorms not listed on booking.com, & skipping the more expensive tourist attractions. Backpacker Luxury opts for the nicest hotel rooms and splurges on activities. Flashpackers are the middle ground & often do a mixture of both.
