Hunting with the Hadzabe of Tanzania 🏹

The Hadzabe are one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes in the world.

And you can (very easily) visit them and see what their life is like. Near the often dry bed of Lake Eyasi, about 1,000 members of this indigenous tribe still exist living off the seemingly barren land.

Unlike other tribes in East Africa— the Hadzabe seem completely unadapted to the modern world. They exist almost totally separate, forging a life by hunting ANYTHING and everything to survive. They don’t attend school, visit the villages, or speak Swahili.

🥾During our hunt with them, I was shocked by the speed they jogged through the brush constantly assaulted by thorns as they took out birds, bush babies, and baboons with their homemade arrows. By the end of the morning we had hustled more than 8 miles through the brush with them and I sensed we slowed them down.

📝How to Visit:

The Lake Eyasi cultural center collects money for the surrounding communities (this can help the Hadzabe in times of drought), about $120 per car, and assigns you a guide to bring you to the Hadzabe if they are in the area.

As a nomadic community, they move often and without warning. It’s best to time your visit for Aug-Nov after the rains.

💭I think it’s important to say — the Hadzabe are survivors. It’s a harsh life out here. I was struck by the lack of sentience they seemed to regard the animals they hunted with. To them — I think, animals are only food, it’s not considered whether they feel pain, so humane methods of hunting are not necessarily on the table. I only say this because so many people glamorize the lives of ancient tribal peoples and their connection with nature.

While YES, the Hadzabe possess incredible knowledge of the land — I wouldn’t say they steward it better than modern man.

Was it worth the $800 per person visit? Absolute

Was it worth the $800 per person visit?

Absolutely.

As we crawled up the thick vines and foliage carpeting the walls of the basin we trekked to, the gorillas remained undisturbed.

They let us approach and spend just over an hour sitting among them. watching the young ones play, the moms eat leaf after leaf, and the patient and powerful silverback sleep in our presence.

Getting an up-close encounter with a species this rare is something I will treasure forever.

While yes, its wildly expensive, especially when you consider our typical kind of travel, its one of those experiences that leaves you a little tear-eyed and hopeful for our planet.

Everyone raves about the Mara. It’s THE big 5 park in Kenya. but Ol Pejeta has Cape Buffalo, Southern White Rhino, Elephant, Leopard, and Lions in abundance too.

It just also has the world’s last two remaining NORTHERN White Rhino, a ton of the elusive Black Rhino, and the rare Reticulated Giraffe.

It also is the only park in Kenya to have a Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

Additionally, Ol Pejeta works with the WWF to pioneer anti-poaching tactics as is currently working to In-Vitro fertilize some surrogate rhino to save the Northern White Rhino species.

We were a bit hesitant to visit the tribal regions

We were a bit hesitant to visit the tribal regions of East Africa.

Mostly because so many “cultural villages” seem set up to provide tourists with the perfect photo op w/ tribe members as props, in exchange for some cash of course — rather than an actual cross-cultural experience or exchange.

While camping in Moroto, Uganda we came across @karatungatours by happenstance. Led by a local Karamojong they take you to villages off the tourist trail and allow you to spend the night within the community.

We drank beer, chatted around the fire, and slept in a boma. They asked questions about our lives in the states and we got to experience a little of their daily lives — even if it was just for 24 hours.

We witnessed firsthand the amount of work it takes to live in the bush. Polygamy and numerous children is a necessity if the sorghum ugali is to be made and goats and cows herded each day. Our stay with the Karamoya was one of our highlights in our Ugandan road trip.

An evening spent sipping sorghum beer & chatting with the Karamojong People of Eastern Uganda 🪶

Also, yes, — tasting fresh milk & cow blo0d.

This traditional supplement to the sorghum-heavy diets of the nomadic herders on the sun-scorched plains has kept them alive for centuries. This practice also leaves the cows themselves, alive and well.

It’s difficult to find a cultural visit to the many tribes in East Africa that doesn't feel as though you are intruding on their life. This was one of those *authentic* feeling experiences. There was no song & dance or show put on for our amusement. It was just a cultural exchange and lots of chatting about our life in the US vs their lives here in the remote villages.
